Current Events – outside the U.S.

When you need a current event that took place outside the U.S., then go to a news site and look for their “World” news section.

On the CNN Web site the section for World news is located toward the bottom left of the home page.  On the USA Today Web site … look at the right hand side, scroll down a bit, and look for a tiny blue link titled “World.”  On the New York Times site the World news link is on the left and on the Washington Post site you have to scroll across the “news” link on the blue menu line at the top and the World news link will appear in a drop down list.

Just LOOK for a link to WORLD news on the news site your using.

Remember I have many news sites linked to the library Web site.

And, remember to look for the print friendly link to print your news item.  This saves paper and ink which is REALLY important at home if your printer prints in color.  Using that print friendly version elimiates those ads and saves tons of ink!

MS Studies current events

Hey freshmen,

Got Ms Studies this semester?  Then you’re going to need a current event and Coach requires that it be about Mississippi, right?

Well, you are certainly welcome to locate a current even from an actual newspaper, a hard copy so to speak.  And we have copies of the Meridian Star and Clarke County Tribune in the library.

But, did you know you can get your newspaper article off the Internet?  Sure you can.  Most of the major newspapers have their newspapers online FREE.  You won’t find the CCT online, but Meridian Star, Clarion Ledger, Laurel-Leader Call, Times Picayune, and many more have Web sites.  (check the library Web site for links to these and more newspapers).  When you check out their Web site, just look for the local or state news section.  When you find an article you want, PLEASE look for the PRINT FRIENDLY link.

If you’ll read my earlier post about current events you’ll see that this saves ink and paper and ink and paper mean $$$.

In the library at school you are REQUIRED to use the print link.  If you can’t find it then ASK FOR HELP.  Very few newspaper sites don’t include a print friendly link for their articles and in if you happen to use one of these, you will need to copy and paste your article into WORD and then print.

If you are just not a computer person, come in and ask me for help.  I’ll be more than happy to show you how to locate your current even online and print it.  Or, if all systems are down there are the print copies of the actual newspapers.  We print on the copying machine for ten cents a page.  Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Current Events

Alot of teachers require students read a current event and write a summary. Most require students turn in a copy of the article. If you’re printing an article from the Internet, look for a “print friendly” link instead of just clicking PRINT. Using a print friendly version saves you a TON of printer ink and that stuff ain’t cheap.

Sometimes it can be difficult to locate that little print friendly link.  It might just be a picture of a little bitty printer. Most of the time it’s going to be somewhere near the top or the bottom of the page, but not always!

And…..

Did you know you can print on “draft” or “economy” and save alot of that expensive printer ink. Go to file, print, and then look around for an option to print as draft or economy. Where you go and what you click is going to depend on your printer. Check out all the tabs and all the buttons to find this feature. Some printers allow you to set this draft or economy as your default settings so that every time your print happy child prints he/she won’t have any option BUT to print cheapo. My old HP712 wouldn’t let me set this as my default; we had to manually select this option every time. My kids were great about doing this because I wasn’t always swift to buy a new ink cartridge. The problem was my dh (dear husband)….he seldom changed the settings.

You can’t really tell a difference either … from a regular copy and one printed in the draft or economy mode … unless you hold up one of each side by side.

Got off the topic, sorry.

Current events. Ok. Go to the high school library Website

….and you’ll find links to several local, state, and national newspapers. 9th grade Mississippi Studies students will have to have a current event that deals with Mississippi … unless the requirements change. Requirements vary from class to class. But, make them babies look for that print friendly link!
